How to work with decoupage paper
Decoupage – Creative Crafting Made Easy
The art of decoupage opens up diverse possibilities for designing home accessories, furniture, and numerous other items. However, it may not always be immediately understandable at first glance, especially when related crafting techniques like Décopatch or napkin art come into play. Are they all the same, or are there differences? In this article, you will gain insights into the application, required materials, and creative variety of decoupage. We will provide answers to the ten key questions about decoupage.
On which materials can I work with decoupage papers?
Thanks to the thick paper, it’s possible to work directly on colored and even dark surfaces. This presents a clear contrast to the napkin art technique, where priming or covering is often necessary. Decoupage papers can be used to decorate a wide variety of materials such as wood, terracotta, ceramics, papier-mâché, metal, and much more in a decorative manner. Decoupage is popular for good reason, whether it’s to give old furniture a new shine or to elevate objects in an exceptional way.

A Guide to Working with Decoupage Papers
Step 1: Begin with a clean, completely dry surface. The best results are achieved with a white or light color. This ensures maximum color vibrancy and, consequently, the optimal outcome.
Step 2: Place the rice paper in the desired position. Don’t worry about creases or folds in the paper; they will disappear after applying the medium.
Step 3: It’s recommended to use our Decoupage Glue & Varnish. Apply a layer beneath the paper by lifting one section at a time. Do not dilute the medium with water. Always use a paintbrush with soft, flat bristles. We adore our Mango Paint Ultra Soft Brush for such tasks.
Continue with Step 3 until the surface is completely covered, and the paper is properly positioned. Ensure that all areas beneath the paper are covered with Decoupage medium.
Apply a layer of Decoupage medium to the top of the piece, starting from the center and working outward to eliminate air bubbles.
Avoid pressing the brush too firmly onto the paper and refrain from going over an area more than once or twice.
Allow the Decoupage medium to dry completely before touching it with your fingers or applying a second coat to avoid damaging the paper fibers.
WARNING: The color may peel off if reworked while still damp. Apply a final top coat with a sealant of your choice and admire your beautiful creation.
